Room 2
Emperor's Toys
by Francine Caringal
APPROACHING the theme of Capitalism with the surrealist style of releasing the potential of the unconscious mind, Caringal’s painting is a juxtaposition of the blue-collar workers' value against the value of such show of wealth in the eyes of capitalists.
The title expresses Capitalism as an empire, led by rich people as its emperor, and the workers equal in place with a price even lower than the value of their toys as presented in the art.
Blue-collar workers were presented through their representative materials (such as a hardhat, suitcase, etc.) locked in a transparent jar. The said jar sits in display among toys tagged with a higher amount.
